The ability to upgrade item items allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Items with weak bases, such as rings, upgrade Item can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade trinkets, weapons, armor and tools for gathering, offering an added bonus or effect while the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, found as loot gathered by enemies or gotten from chests or missions. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before they are upgraded.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool and replaces the glyphs by a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can be upgraded so many times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, however the materials required do not.
