1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive cousin, the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we've examined. They feature motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. And, like other premium iRobot models (including the top pick) they employ smart mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. They also come with a feature called carpet boost which boosts the robot's power when it sees an abundance of dirt on the carpet in order to get it cleaned up quickly.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare They're also particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on socks and shoes, and it couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good robot vacuum value, especially if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. Plus, it's very quiet and can work while you're at work, or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features strong suction and a self-emptying bin. In tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete the entire house with only 66 percent of its battery left. It also did an excellent job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with mixed flooring types, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-notch and it swiftly eluded fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score an exemplary 10/10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might expect from its price tag. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a rotating motion that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to create an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It is capable of vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to be caught by low thresholds and is louder than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
