What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Over time, this genetic variability can result in the development of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution in their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next step is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this are not clear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
