The best robot hoover can clean and mop without requiring your attention, and will leave your floors clean. Its surprisingly affordable price and top-of-the-line features (such as dirt detection) are a plus.

Be sure to regularly inspect your robot's brushes for hair that is tangled and large particles, and wash them when needed. Some models also self-empty their onboard dust bin into a larger one at the base, which decreases the amount of fine dust released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive cousin, the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums that we have examined. They have motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the top model), they use smart mapping to produce precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like furniture legs. The robots also have a feature called Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests on bare floors and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a good value for those whose home or office has a lot of bare floors and you want to save some money. It's also extremely quiet and works while you're at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and efficient in taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also comes with an impressive suction system and an automatic hoover bin for emptying. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This high-performing combination vacuum and mop utilizes advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. The app lets you set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average in comparison to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to take off and extend its mops. This can help avoid cross contamination. Its flex arm is also ideal for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a good cleaning job on different flooring and rooms with different flooring types including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was great, and it avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy models of the competition. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic cleaner and mop mop or vacuum that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a problem in the mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable, but it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It comes with a variety of advanced features that help you forget your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the auto vacuum and mop works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on how dirty they are.

If you own a larger home, it is worth choosing a model that has the option of cleaning zones or spots. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. Also a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating movement that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or set up a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app also provides access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a powerful suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for pet hair. You can also organize a spot-cleaner that will thoroughly clean the area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to get caught on low thresholds and is more noisy than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
